Not really a LEGO only question, but inspired by set 7256 - Jedi Starfighter™

Ok, can someone explain to me the new ids?
On the Jedi Fighter, and also seen painted on the sides of the Clones Star
Destroyers, is a round tan disk with Dark Red Split Circle Pattern.

Republic Forces led (originally) by the Jedi
Right-- based on the Geonosians, who built them and are a major part of the
separtists, and who are a hive race ( most natrual hives are hexagonal )
Yup...
Correct afte rmuch destruction and the iron rule of the dakside.

Ok, so what does the split circle pattern represent? The Jedi Council? Seems
to me that someone in the LucasArts design & the (HAH!) continuity
departments made a goof - the split circle to me would seem more appropriate
for the Seperatists while the triangles would seem more appropriate for the
Clone (Republic) forces (theyre similar to the Imperial pattern, especially
when grouped in a hexagon).
