I think a few weeks might be cutting it a bit fine to bring a set to market!
I think the main inspiration is seeing that their customers are willing to
put some huge models together. I'm sure the Master Builders at Lego love
doing this sort of thing. They only usually get the opportunity when they
do a display. Notice how the size of these sets have gradually increased as
more and more are sold.
We know they look at AFOL models - they've bought out designs by Dan Siskind
and James Mathis. The Santa Fe engine looks like it's borrowed a bit from
past AFOL MOCs too, but they have to be very careful not to obviously copy
unsolicited designs for legal reasons.
I imagine that it's actually quite difficult to design a good-looking model
that's easy to demonstrate to a child (through instructions) how to build
it. Since this set is aimed at the more serious collector, they're probably
glad of the chance to use more interesting construction techniques.
