I agree with you Mark, that is almost definetly what they did.

I think/know the blighter is a technic 3x3 wheel hub. Look through your
peices and find one, often they come in light gray or brown but I have
some in yellow. they have an axel slot which is probably how its held in
place, and six holes rimming the edges.
