Thanks for you opinion,

Pardon my cynicism Greg, but TLC has hit their bullseye dead center.  As I
mentioned in a previous post, I believe 10026 is a product of clever timing
and research, and we are once again the lab rats.  That's fine with me, as I
don't object to the $40 price tag.  Some obviously do, however.
Getting to the point, TLC can charge $39.99 for this set and get away with
it by virtue of the novelty of chrome parts.  This is my opinion, but it's a
safe guess after reading the initial buzz and approving posts (dripping with
drool, I might add).

Another angle is, of course, that chrome parts are genuinely more costly to
produce.  Take a look at the chrome "coffee mugs" on Anakin's speeder from
the Bounty Hunter Persuit set.  Flip one over and you'll notice that the
bottom is not chrome, it's white.  This may imply that an addtional step in
production is taken to coat the pieces with chrome.  This process is
probably a bit different than printing pieces.  As more and more future sets
incorporate chrome, it becomes a more standard feature, and therefore less
costly.  The pricey nature of 10026 may be reflected by the initial cost of
modifying a production line to completely coat a part with shiny material.
Then again, they might have pulled it out of a hat!

(...) If you look at the gold disk from the Millenium Throwbot/Slizer, the bottom is tan. This fits in with the "the parts have to be made specially for chrome". I think they need new moulds as well to account for the thickness of the coating, but I (...) (22 years ago, 20-Jun-00, to lugnet.starwars)

But I just realized there would be no modification in production process, cuz they' have been doing chrome for a while, just not on a grand scale. This is the stuff that would be neat to have answered by a Lego rep. -Matt . (22 years ago, 20-Jun-02, to lugnet.starwars)
