Apperently the time device reacts differently to red then any other color
because the red one is the only one that works.

Well its not the red one is the only one that works, its the the time stream
changes all objects that go post relativistic retroactively to red. This is
known as red shift as a post relativist object it is moving away from us faster
than where it is actually standing still from a strictly three dimentional
perspective. Thus all time machines that succeed in vacum are retroactively
changed to red in order to maintain time stream continuity.
You can spot older model time machines as soon as they are observed by a more
advanced time travelling culture all their time machine are blue due to blue
shift.
