As far as I can see, the highlight-list unfortunately doesnt show what threads
that has been replied on lately; it looks more like a selection of what
somebody (The Grand Admiral) thinks is interesting (and theres some threads
he dont highlights). To keep track of developments one have to browse through
all the latest posts all the time, to make sure that nobody has replied. This
might work well in the other groups, but not really here in .space, since
theres most activity here. Anyways, its not the first time Ive posted a reply
to a reply, that went unanswered; I wonder if peeps just doesnt expect that, or
if its just because I take myself too much time to consider before I post. But
it seems like you managed to add a transverse line (the red one) and rocket
launchers (?) by yourselves... Have you considered some of my other suggestions
about the front and back?

As for recording my MOC designs, the answer is no. Oddly as an engineer I
eat, breath, and sleep CAD -- but my experience with lDraw has made it seem
impossible, or at the least not time efficient to render the models with it.
The geometry it self would take forever to align in that CAD environment.

I think you should try out MlCad; without knowing particulary much of the
interior, I would say that you could make a .mpd-file of the racer in 4-8 hours:
the trick is to make all odd angled parts into subfiles: then you can build on
them as normal and then place and angle the whole lot in the topfile in one go.
(another tip is that you should place one of the joints in the origo, since
subfiles is turned around this one, and that way its much easier to connect it
to the rest)
But if you think the geometry is so bad, I REALLY would like to see a .mpd of it
;-D

Furthermore I never really saw a need to record each model simply because
they are only steps in a continual learning process. Once the problems of a
particular model have been solved there is no reason to go back -- since I
hopefully integrate the new lessons in the next model. Although I do keep
track of the difficult parts by making diagrams and such.

I had some of the same considerations (and Im a bit embarrased by the first
models), but its good for the understanding to move from simple to complex, so
they were allowed in on my webpage (and you never know what level the visitors
start at). But theyre great to have; not only would Ive forgotten most of them
by now, you also have a second chance to consider if something could be improved
when you rebuild the model in Mlcad, which you really cant do in real life
unless you have enough pieces to build a copy. Theyre also great for tracking
the development to see when you starts repeating yourself and its time to tread
new paths. Generally you get a good libary of all the small things youve
tested: some were good and some bad, but you dont have to repeat the errors or
reinvent the good stuff. (I didnt really understood my prime technique untill
after Id had looked at a lot of models from the (Ml)Cad-perspective, but then;
Im not an engineer, you might not have that kind of problem...)
And the trouble is nothing compared to actually building the model!

The idea of indenting the front grill on the space racer is awesome,
unfortunately the internal framework is so cramped inside the fuselage that I
would have to extend the front end to make that possible. Doing that would
create a discontinuity with respect to the flat front. The color blending is
interesting. My intention though was for a blocky look -- originally the
whole thing was gray, then the yellow part was red, then I added red tile
extensions going out to the side, finaly I replaced the red with yellow. I
have no logical reasoning behind the choice, it just looked right to me --
plus, I was running low on gray tiles.
The megablok thing has always irked me. I mean they stink, but I am more
obsessed with form then being strictly Lego based (then again that is the
first and last model I will ever use imitation Lego blocks). I spent days
trying to figure out an alternative, but there were none that fit the
specifications I had set. I cannot wait till Lego does make a wing tile
shape - that could bring many new and possibly revolutionary building
possibilities to light. At school I have access to an ABS rapid prototyping
machine -- although when I asked to use it to make custom Lego blocks I was
given the evil eye and shooed out of the shop. Maybe someday I will sneak in
there late at night and make a few hundrend of those...

Please do! and do a lot of experimentation so we can show TLC what new pieces we
want and why.

Your compliments are simultaneously humbling and flattering. I am glad
somebody enjoys those silly space ships.
|
Hey! you dont have time to blush: We want more ships! ;-)
|
It was only three years ago that I realized there was an active adult
community of Lego freaks -- I cannot emphasize enough how seeing many of the
amazing Lego MOCs out there has inspired creativity and motivation.

Same here, same here; the competitions is also great for trying something
completely different. By the way: have you had you darkages, and if so, when did
you get out of them? (or: wheres all the other models youve made since 2000?)
|
BTW. Do you have any of your stuff posted on brickshelf, I looked under your
name but could not find anything...
|
Over there I go by my nickname SirBugge, but its only the models Ive made for
competitions here at lugnet (that had to be hosted somewhere; the rest is saved
for the webpage). Ive presented all of them here at lugnet if you want to read
about them, but without much feedback, theyve dissapeared dissapointingly fast.
By the way: Whats the story behind brentlymills?

PS: Im away till sometimes after the weekend, so engaging radio silence...
