They use two hemispheres sandwiched inside the socket. You can use one by
itself if you really feel like it, but its a tiny bit sloppier without the
second hemisphere to ride against. The only thing holding them together is
pressure from the socket walls, and I dont believe there is a way to attach
anything to the inside, other than possibly plunking it down on a +-shaped
grid of studs, much like you can do with the 4x4 and 6x6 radar dishes. The
outside has a 2x2 grid of sockets that are form-fitting on the studs, though
they dont have quite the same amount of grip that the tube-n-wall bricks do,
probably because they dont have any means of using compressions to grip. So,
unless you want to drop them into a socket, or glue them together, youre pretty
much stuck with bowls.
