It appears so. First, the long-range probe searching out individual planets,
and then the data-collecting probe to test the air, water, soil to see if the
planet is suitable for their species.

They first scan the Earth to see how fertile is
then do...colonization. I hate to be assuming things but this is extremely
strange.

Colonization is much preferred to invasion.

Are these pods from the alien civilization that had the
unknown probe out?

The design of the craft is strikingly similar, and I believe it is from the same
cililization.

What happened to the probe?

As said before, is has gone. I believe its job here is done and it has gone
off in search of other planets.
