Well-- Twice now I've designed hangar bay doors for a *base* (not a capital
ship) in the same way that I'm really rather happy with, although it
requires some extra mechanism room... I also don't see anyone who's
mentioned it (at a quick search) so I figured I'd share...
It's basically a set of sliding doors that meet in the middle when closed,
and that both open at the same time. They use the technic racks (1x4 plates
w/ gear teeth on top) in a long row either along the door or as an extention
on the sides (Depending on space requirements and looks). A small 8-cog gear
on each side slides each door side to side, and the two gears are controlled
by a single knob. Hence, turning the knob opens/closes both doors at the
same time, at the same rate, meeting in the middle.
It's really easy to build into a base (but probably not as easy for a ship).
I'm currently working on a version of part of Echo Base (the rebel base on
Hoth) that uses this system, and because I'm building the base raised up on
4 bricks, adding a concealed mechanism underground is pretty easy.

| I brought this up, again, after seeing an ancient article listed underneath the building tips section of the Galaction Shipyard (great site, Jon.) Anyhow, with my newest ship (grrr, I need a camera!!!) I constructed a very simple, yet effective door (...) (23 years ago, 14-Aug-01, to lugnet.space)
