Well, how about a strong and solid center block, like a main fueselage, and
then attach the fighter bays on either side? Kind of like this from front
view: <=O=>
The "O" is the center body, nice and solid, the "=" and "<" or ">" are the
big baseplates for the fighter bays. You could use 10" X 10" baseplates on
top and road plates below. Maybe a bunch of click-hinges and technic beams
could create a sloping frame (but it might be slightly more steep than you'd
prefer).
