Believe it or not, the LEGO Mindstorms web site has a lot of great info about
both the Scout and the RCX. Go to the Mindstorms site at
http://www.legomindstorms.com/ and follow the links to the Scout SDK. The SDK
includes an Adobe Acrobat .PDF file that gives a surprising amount of detail.
This kit also includes a programming language for the Scout that can be used
to write much more sophisticated programs than can be created from the Scout's
LCD display. Of course, you will need to have the IR tower from a RIS (also
available separately from LEGO Shop@Home) in order to download programs into
the Scout.
There was a somewhat collaborative effort to reverse-engineer the Scout going
on here on LUGNET a couple of months back, but it seemed to pretty much die
down when LEGO released the Scout SDK. Still, you might find some additional,
unofficial info if you search the LUGNET archives for "Scout internals".
Hope this helps!
