Spoiler alert! Don't read this if you really want to enjoy the story.

About the number 42:
In the story, it turns out that the existence of earth actually was an
astronomical experiment by higher powers to find out the ultimate question
to the ultimate answer. Yes, you're reading it right. The ultimate answer
itself was already discovered ages before in a similar big project. When
they found out that the ultimate answer about life, the universe and
everything was '42', people realised that didn't mean anything if you don't
know the question.
Hence the big project to discover the ultimate question. In the end, by
investigating the essence of life on earth, our 'hero' discovers that the
ultimate question was something like 'what makes 7 times 8?' As a shocking
insight, this multiplication not equalling '42' explains all about the
essence of life, the universe and everything: it doesn't add up.
