i'm interested in using a Sony Clie N770 (Palm OS 4.1) to program my RCX
(RIS 1.5). I ran across pbForth in the book "The Unofficial Guide to
Lego Mindstorms" by Jonathan B. Knudsen. I downloaded pbForth.srec
(version 11/11/2001 22:08) from Ralphs pbForth site to my RCX using
nqc-win-2-4-r2. After downloading, the display should be blank, that's
what Knudsen says. Mine shows "4th". Probably that's because this is a
newer version of pbForth?
Now, on my Sony, i have a demo version of VT Online 1.5. According to
Knudsen and to some recent postings on this group i configured it to
method "serial", port "infrared", baud "2400", data bits "8", parity "n"
(none), stop bits "1", handshake "none". According to Knudsen, after
sending a "return", the RCX should display "ok". But nothing happens.

1) Any hint, how to get this to work? Are there any experiences /
instructions on programming a RCX using pbForth and a Palm PDA? Should i
use a different terminal program, a different pbForth version?

Well, for starters, the RCX uses a different modulation scheme on
the IR port, but these guys have a C solution...

You'll need a Palm SDK and some patience. Is there any or some interest
in getting this for the Palm? I'm having trouble justifyting the
effort in pbForth becuase the new USB tower has a goofy interface and
getting it to work on all platforms might be more trouble than it's
worth...

The PDA is cheap enough and cool enough that I might just try it.

Cheers, Ralph

(...) If you changed pbForth to use 2400,o,8,1 instead of 2400,n,8,1 wouldn't that make it work with the USB tower? It seems to me like that is what the standard Lego firmware expects from either tower. That appears to be how it works under Windows, (...) (23 years ago, 5-Mar-02, to lugnet.robotics.rcx.pbforth)
