In a nutshell, both books are excellent. Jonathan's unofficial guide is a
great overview and starting point for the many different languages that have
sprung up around the RCX. Dave's book is more geared towards building in
depth with both the Lego supplied programming environment and Dave's own
NQC. I would recommend Dave's book for the beginner techie or non-technical
type who wants to deepen their mindstorms knowledge in both building and
NQC. Jonathan's book delves into the different firmware options available
for the RCX and serves as a great programmers reference.
Best points:
Dave's book builds many different types of robots using NQC as a programming
language. You will learn many different building and programming techniques
(in NQC).
Jonathan's book programs the same basic robots (with some minor variations)
in many different types of languages and firmwares. If you are interested in
alternative firmware (PBForth, LegOS, etc.), this is the book for you.
I am sure I have oversimplified two great books, so your mileage may vary.
If you can do it, buy both, I did.

Subject: New Dave Baum Book?
I notice Dave Baum has just published a book called "Dave Baum's
Definitive Guide to Lego Mindstorms," complete with CDROM.
Has anyone read this book?
The cover claims the book includes:
-- Numerous projects including 14 sample robots to build
-- Important construction techniques and step-by-step instructions
for building robots
-- Teaches readers how to program in LEGO'S RCX and the author's own
language, NQC
I'd specifically be interested in any comparisons between Dave's book
and Knudsen's Unofficial Guide to LEGO Mindstorms Robots," but would
welcome any opinions.
Thanks,
Mark Winters
