I am not running Debian linux, but I got it work under Suse linux with a 2.4.6
kernel.
There was almost the same problem.
I can't find in your kernel message, where the usb tower has been attached. You
should check this first, before you are possibly trying to use the wrong device
node.
There is also a patch for the 2.6.4 kernel, that fixed a problem with the
legousbtower.c.
Look at Sourceforge for that, I don't know, if it works with a later kernel. I
will try that with a 2.6.5-7 kernel (Suse) the next days.
I hope it helps.

| Hi, I'm running brickOS(0.2.6.10.6-1) on my debian (kernel2.6.8) using the /lib/modules/2.6.8-3...sbtower.ko driver for the usbtower(robotics inventions 2.0 - RCX2.0). Adding this driver gave me the following kernel message: Sep 22 18:51:46 (...) (20 years ago, 22-Sep-04, to lugnet.robotics.rcx.legos)
