Hello all --
I have a Linux system with a USB Lego IR tower, and have
been intermittently poking around on the web (once every few
weeks) in hopes of getting a brickOS system to work on it,
with varying levels of enthusiasm. I've gotten it to go
now, and thought I'd share the working combo.
For strange reasons of my own, I wanted to stick with
the v2.4 kernel on the system, and this was the cause of
the complications. I've never tried it with a 2.6 kernel,
that's next on my list.
A working combination is:
- Custom-compiled 2.4.26 kernel
- Debian Stable ("Woody") distro, which provides...
- binutils-h8300-hms 2.9.5.0.37.4
- gcc-h8300-hms 2.95.2.2.1
- brickos-0.9.0 release tarball (from SourceForge)
- legousbtower v2.4.x 0.55 from SourceForge CVS, module "LegoUSB"
I honestly don't know if I was just being thick or
what, but it took me a while to put together the fact
that I had to actually pull the right legousbtower driver
out of CVS. CVS itself doesn't scare me, I use it
regularly professionally, but the instructions linked-to
from the SourceForge project page are pretty generic,
and it's useful if one notices and appreciates the
relevance of the "New CVS Module" message from August
of 2002 on the project page.
I don't mean to be too critical of the instructions --
in retrospect, they don't actually say anything wrong,
and obviously there ultimately *were* enough clues
for me to put it together, but, as I say, part of
the point of this message is to put the combo together
all in one place, in case there's someone out there who
is equally idiosyncratic to me, but perhaps not as
obsessed/clever.
I have a Debian Testing ("Sarge") partition on the
same machine, and plan to test the 2.6 kernel and stuff
on that system soon.

| Andrew, How fun to hear of your 2.4 success with brickos-0.9.0 It is good to hear that this was possible. With respect to your next efforts I have news... (...) Both brickos-0.9.0 and lnpd-0.9.0 are now debian packages. If these are useful in your (...) (20 years ago, 29-Jan-05, to lugnet.robotics.rcx.legos)
