I think it would be possible to directly drive the IR port from your own code to send and recieve NQC-style communications, but the ability isn't built into (...)  I found in the linux pcmcia forum, that the serial pcmcia card from Socket Communications, which I want to use to download programs to rcx, sets the speed internally four times faster then expected.
