Why do you want to communicate with a cable when you can use IR transmission ?
I think this IR transmission very easy to use and in this case you could use 6
sensors and 6 motors together.
May be the use of LejOS is the reason....(I don' t know this soft)
I think a simple electronic circuit between one output and one input should be
the answer to your question. It would contains two resistances and one
opto-electronic but it needs soldering.
The opto-electronic act as a electric relay but is faster.
If you are really interested I can mail you the circuit schematic.
