As it turns out it is much easier than I thought...
All that I had to do was point the remotes at each other,
the Sony remote can 'learn' from other remotes.
I selected a free button and then I pointed my
Lego remote at the Sony and pressed the button
that I wanted to 'teach' and like magic it worked.
The neat thing that I can do now is write macros
on the remote that can augment the abilities of the
RCX. Now I can have three programs on the RCX
and another 3 that are run from the remote.
It works rather well.
Now if I could just get the remote to take out the trash!
