Maybe you can try the laser pointer that Mike Burger (and several others?)
did for the RCX. And use the light sensor to detect it?

Subject: how detect other RCX robots with light sensors?
I want to know if there another RCX infront of me at a maximum distance of
30cm. I tried to use only the light sensors but it was not enough. Does
anyone
has already tried this. Maybe putting some light in the RCX like infrared
(I'm
trying this). I'm obtaining better results if I put two light sensors
connected to the same port. Maybe this is for two reasons a kind of
averaging
system and the increase of the dynamic range.
Thank you
