The problem is that LEGO light sensor is basically color blind, all you get is
different reflectivity levels. Take care of dark shiny surfaces that can reflect
as much as lighter ones (try to place the sensor at an angle to avoid direct
reflexion)

My color sensor (http://philohome.com/sensors/colorsensor.htm) is far from
perfect but it is rather simple, and I was able to sort 6 colors with correct
reliability (http://philohome.com/bricksorters/sorter3.htm).

Taos inc makes nice integrated color sensors
(http://www.taosinc.com/product_detail.asp?cateid=11&proid=12) but I have yet
been unable to put my hands on these beasts at a reasonnable price...
