Here's another solution worth mentioning:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=490058
It uses the 3-12V regulated power supply available from Radio
Shack (part no. 273-1667):
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=490059
The adapter cable is part no. 273-1742. I think I got the clips
at Radio Shack, too, but I can't find the part number in the most
recent catalog.
If you notice in the second photo, I put a small notch in the RCX's
battery cover for the adapter cord. This isn't strictly necessary, but
I did it to make the cover fit flush to the back of the RCX.
When using the 9V setting on the power supply, the RCX puts
out about 8.4V under load.
Usual disclaimer applies here (i.e. I'm not liable for fried RCX's,
do so at your own risk, etc... :)
