Well, after months of flaky IR comms between
my tower and the RCX, I can finally say that
the tower has died. :-(
I've forgotten who first suggested it, but using
a videocamera to see if the IR led is still
functional is brilliant!
I confirmed that I could see IR pulses from
other remote controls, then tried to communicate
from the tower. Only the green LED showed up in
the viewfinder.
Now that it's dead, I'll be phoning the nice folks
at LEGO S@H for a replacement tower. My RCX is #21529
and might have some early production issues. When I
get the new tower, I'll try replacing the IR LED
and the drive transistor in the old one to see if it helps.
