FYI, just in case anyone has this problem in the future, I was able to fix it by
using "Update Driver" in Device Manager while the NXT was in SAM-BA mode, and
telling Windows that I would choose the driver.  On the list were the Lego
driver and the Atmel driver.  I chose the Atmel driver and it now seems to be
working fine.

Hey, I apologize in advance if this is a n00b question; I've looked
around and couldn't find any detailed information.

I frequently need to be able to reflash the firmware using SAM-BA
(because the NXT software's firmware flashing feature crashes on me, and
I'd rather not try to debug it when I know that SAM-BA works fine for
me), but I also frequently need to be able to use the official NXT
driver (e.g. for NeXTExplorer).  SAM-BA refuses to detect my NXT while
the official driver is installed, because the official firmware flash
mode driver sets itself up instead of the Atmel driver.  I've tried
uninstalling the official driver in Device Manager, but it simply
reinstalls itself the next time I insert the NXT that's in SAM-BA mode,
never allowing the Atmel driver to install.  My temporary workaround is
to completely uninstall the NXT driver (in Control Panel's Add/Remove
Programs) every time I need to use SAM-BA, and then rerun the installer
to put it back when I need to use NeXTExplorer.  This is very
inconvenient, since the installer often wants to reboot my PC before the
driver is functional.  (Heck, even if I didn't have to reboot, it would
be very inconvenient anyway!)

My question is: does anyone know of a somewhat simple way to use SAM-BA
without completely removing the NXT driver from my PC, or at least a way
that's simpler than what I'm doing now?

Again, I apologize if this is a n00b question.

Thanks in advance.
