John, there are a lot of people using the NXT motors this way, just to get the
feedback from the built-in rotation sensors. The best example would be the
MDPers who built one joystick with a NXT kit to control a moving vehicle made
with another.

So if these guys do it, I assume it's pretty safe to say that it's no problem
for the motors, as long of course as you make sure they are in "float" mode;
that is, the NXT isn't trying to force them in a particular position.

Then again, maybe said MDPers will have a more qualified advice; maybe they
fried their motors already :-/


Well, I don't want to claim to be an expert, but I'll tell you what
I've done.  I have a couple remotes that I've been using for over a
year, and I haven't had problems with them.  One not only uses the
rotation sensors, but also uses the motors for force feedback.
