Is this OK for getting 6V to motors connected to the L293s?

I tapped off the center of the battery back and get about 6V. I then
soldered a wire at that point on the battery pack and then soldered the
other end to pin 8 (Vs) of each of the L293s (I bent the L293 pin 8 up
to keep it out of the L293 socket and soldered the wire right on the
pin - looks funny but works).

Now, my 6v motors run fine (when using the full battery pack, they would
reset the HB).  Also, the L293s don't seem to get too hot! :-)

One problem I see is this by-passes the on/off switch, which means these
wires are always powered.

So, is this ok, or I am I about to buy some more L293s?

Keith
PS I am using motors from Radio Shack pencil sharpeners.  This was an
idea Fred had posted long ago.  I was able to keep the gears, too, so
the speed/power is pretty good.  Not bad for $2.99 each. Now, if those wheels
would just stay on ;-)
