And when using the GP2D12, it's necesary to cut the resistor pullup out of the
circuit for the port that the sensor is plugged into, correct? Thus making the
port useless for the typical light and reflectance sensors that would
otherwise be easily used in that port?

Why does it make the ports useless for other sensors? If you need a
pullup-resistor,
you can still solder a 47k resistor directly to your sensor-connector
between Vcc and
Sensor in. Thus in my opinion the HB can be used more flexible without
the pullup-resistors.
