Already serveral ideas have been mentioned on processor upgrades.
Instead of such a quantum jump, why not instead a small bunt.
ie. Motorola has recently announced availability of the
68HC12. Although certainly not the screamers of a PowerPC, et.al.
it is compatible with source code as well as having like
peripherals. ...and it is probably easier to obtain than
a 68HC11A1FN :-).
