i would say either live with the 1x8, whcih doesn't do any harm, or
get the suggested 2x16.

Where I can get the pcode sources? I downloaded pcode_pc.zip from Cherupaka, but the .asm file included talks about "Rough Warrior" not handy board... also there are a number of defines to supply... Is that the right source? and if it is what are the defines to include to obtain handy board v.1.2 pcode? I experimented a little, but the resulting pcode doesn't work with my HB. I'm pretty sure the 20x4 LCD isn't compatible, but I'll like to make some test.

best regards

YOu need the pcocde for the HB, the special as11 assembler, and a shell script facility for the as11_ic program. these are all pthere. look at (...)
