because if you put it into zap mode, you'll fry your batteries --
unless you've switched to a much higher amperage pack.

   and just use it to drive my tethered robot instead of batteries?
   (i.e. remove the batteries entirely)

no, because you can't send that much current down the RJ11 cable.
unless your robot draws very little power even when motors are on;
i.e., less than 500 mA or so.
