I am in the process of assembling a Handyboard. All had gone well until I
got to the stage where you download the code to the HB for the first time.
This is before the memory is installed.

I used HBDL to download with the register set to 0x0c. I got an error. The
error said something like "Invalid reg (0x0D) ...". I assumed this was the
rror I should have gotten because the memory circuit was not installed. I
went on to the next step that called for software to be used in the testing
process. I got the same error again. So I started to try the other software
downloaders. DL AND DLM. The results were similar but not the same. When
using DL it says that config register 0x0D has been set, then says that it
can not synchronize with the board and I should try again. To use DL I go
to a full screen dos window and type dl pcode_hb.s19. With DLM I get an
error that it expect xx bytes but only received yy bytes. To run DLM I type
dlm pcode_hb.s19 -256 at the DOS prompt. Again this is in a full screen DOS
session in Win95.

In all cases it does actually download some code. It seems to die at the end.

Does anybody have any suggestions for me? As I have said, all the other
testing steps check out. I ordered all the parts straight from the parts
list, so I have exaclty the parts mentioned there. The modem cable is a
standard AT serial cable. The phone cable is the correct type. I ordered it
from Mouser using the part number from the parts list.

I am not sure that I have the correct CPU. I ordered 2 Motorola 68HC11A1FN.
The chips I got have the Motorola logo on them with the folloing numbers:

installed chip
SC80575VFN
4632459
C96N9330

JDZLQ

Spare chip
SC80575VFN
4632459
C96N9314

No where on either chip does it say MC68HC11. Is the CPU my problem?

Thanks Jonathan Swaby

Jonathan: Recently had the same problem myself. One of my colleagues passed on a little utility he wrote ( load68hc11 ) which set my config register just fine. I could then use HBDL for uploading programs. I sent the loadhc11 to fredm for him to (...) (27 years ago, 23-Oct-97, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)
