1. I don't have convenient access to an o'scope so I'm hoping to get
by without one.  I am in the market for a new DMM (my birthday's
coming up :->), and I've located one that looks like it might be
useful, a Wavetek (formerly Beckman Ind.) DM27XT ($115 at Circuit
Specialists).  Besides all the usual stuff, it has frequency
measurement to 20MHz, which looks like it would be useful for most of
the testing steps where a 'scope is recommended.  Anyone have any
comments about this idea or this particular device?

I'm not personally familiar with that particular model, but I use a
FLUKE with similar features. The frequency measuring is a nice addition.
The inclusion of a bar graph in the LCD can be handy in looking at
fluctuations.

If I could have only one or the other, as much as I'd miss the meter, I
think I would have to go with a scope. Except for the meter's convience
in measuring resistance, you can do about everything else with a scope.
Voltage, Current (with an adapter) and Frequency measuring. One of the
many great things about a scope is identifying troublesome noise and
ambient signals. Its like visually peering into your circuit.

But price alone can sure make a meter the choice over a scope. Try your
local "tradin rags" for a good used scope. Having repaired and
calibrated them, TEKTRONIX is my personal favorite.

Hey, maybe someone on this list would wanna sell one cheap, who knows?
Ken's birthday is comin up.
