It is a useful for wireless communication (one way), beacon detection
(the 6.270 boards used it for this) and for collision detection.

What is the difference between the Sharp Demodulator and the one you get
from Radio Shack.

The part on the Handyboard has a 'center frequency' of 38Khz whereas
the Radio Shack part has a center frequency of 40Khz. The Handyboard
board uses 'OPTIC' technology and doesn't have a metal case so it
takes up about 1/3 the space of the RS part. Both are schematically
similar internally.

How do you use the onboard IR demodulator as a digital input.

When you read the digital input port, the state of the detector
can be read from bit 2 of address 1000. The following program
(from the assembly documentation) continually reads the state
of the IR detector and based on whether it is a logic 1 or 0
sets the motor 0 output to forward or backward (which has the
effect of turning on the red and green LEDs to reflect the state)

     while (1) {if (4 & peek(0x1000)) fd(0); else bk(0);}

This can be really wild if you actually have a motor connected :-)

Are there different kinds of IR Emiiters.

"IR Emiiters" in this context are IR Leds. And yes, there are
several kinds. The primary differences are the amount of current
they can take (and hence their brightness) They also emit at
different frequencies, but the easy ones to get all work as
emitters.
