as has been discussed on this list, the Handy Board wasn't really
designed for three volt toy motors. Reducing the voltage and doubling
the motor chips is a reasonable approach, however.

The Handy Board requires 7.2 volts to operate, because of the voltage
drop inherent in the main voltage regulator. That is still a little
high for running three volt motors.

If you were to take a 4.8 or 6.0 volt tap off the battery pack, you
could run that voltage into the motor supply using the "how to run
motors at other voltages" hack described in the Handy Board FAQ.

This could be a nice solution because you wouldn't use additional
batteries.

In your message you said:
Hi Fred

I am attemping to run two low voltage DC motors (as motors 0 and 1),
around 3V each(I don't have specs). I have piggybacked two of the motor
driver chips (and maybe adding a third) to handle the higher current but
they are still getting quite warm.

I would like to reduce the voltage supplied to the motors in hopes that
it will limit the current drawn and not heat up the chips.

Can the battery pack in the HB be reconfigured to supply half the
voltage without affecting the HB operation? and if so do you think this
might be a solution?

Thanks

I think I might have wrote something wrong before. I said that you can use an external battery of 3V. I take it back. Sorry... I didn't realise that it would only work for 6 volts to 36 volts.
