I ended up with a display that did this very thing (A Rolm display I think),
and what I did was to cut the contrast lead coming out of the LED connector,
and then solder a 20k pot to the GND, +5V, and Contrast leads so that I could vary
the contrast myself. The contrast lead goes to the wiper/center/variable lead
of the pot. I glued it right to the edge of the display.
As I recall, the contrast lead is connected straight to ground on the Handyboard,
which works fine for most displays, just not for mine. My display had that
problem when new BTW.
