1. Which 68HC11 to get: the ...A1 or the ...E1?

The E variant can handle 4 IC lines and 4 OC lines, while the A must do 3
IC lines and 5 OC lines.  The IC and OC lines are the way the processor
handles timer-sensitive signals, such as RC signals.  The Handyboard can
handle up to 2 ICs and 2 OCs, the others are used for the buzzer, etc.

2. Do we just put in the parts list to Digikey or Jameco or is there more
to it?

I bought a kit, with everything labelled.  Prabal Dutta is who I dealt
with, very satisfactorily.  I don't know if he's still supplying the kits.
I also had had very little experience in assembling and soldering.  The
kit's staged assembly and testing approach helps a lot.

3. What kind of logic probe to get and where do we get that?  Can't afford
an
    oscilloscope.

I got a cheapie ($15) at a local Radio Shack, it's fast enough for the
68HC11.  An oscilloscope is nice, though.

4. We figured we would need an analog output (through a DAC?) to feed into
the R/C transmitter - eventually.  Where would that fit into the scheme
of
things?  Can a DAC be controlled by the 68HC11?

I am going to (if I get my #%&*%)#@ code to work) hook my four RC receiver
PWM signals (which would normally go right to the servo motors) up to the
Input Capture lines, use interrupt routines to grab those pulse lengths
(which are the joystick commands), monitor and/or massage them in the main
program, and them put them back out on the Output Compare lines to the
servos.  I've done it with two on the Handyboard (used IC2&3, and OC1/PAI
and OC3, if I remember right). I'd be happy to share that code, the
version which worked, that is.  :-)

Hello: First - thanks for all the good information that we were able to find on the handyboard web page and on the associated ftp site. My son and I have decided that we would like to build the handyboard rather than buy one ready-built. We have no (...) (28 years ago, 19-Dec-96, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)
