Where is a good place to get IR relectance sensors?

Also, I'm having a little trouble comprehending some specs.
What is the "sensing distance". For example, (in the Mouser CAtalog) the sensing distance of as Omron optical sensor with built in amplifier is 5mm. Does this mean that it can only detect an object 5mm away or that at 5mm from an object, it will be at its full 5V?

Any help would be appreciated.

(...) There may be a miscommunication here. There are IR Reflectance sensors, that are designed to note notches and bar codes and such, which have a sensing distance measured in millimeters, and there are IR receiver modules that were originally (...)
