Note 1: a patent application doesn't "protect" anything. It simply
informs people that an application for a patent has been made which may
or may not actually be granted. It doesn't prevent anyone from doing
anything, but if the patent IS granted then the patent holder may have
legal options available to them.
Note 2: a patent does not in itself prevent anyone from doing anything
they want. Patents are not in force until tried by the courts. That
is, a patent holder must start a legal action against someone they feel
is violating their granted patent. Then the courts decide if the patent
is enforcable and if it has been violated.
Of course all this costs LOTS of money (as does the original patent
application) so everyone better be REALLY sure of themselves before they
start anything.

| (...) Here's the exact patent text from my license agreement (found under III. Title): The communications protocol is protected by a pending patent application. That's it, in it's entirety. Now we can discuss whether I violated the License Agreement (...) (26 years ago, 1-Dec-98, to lugnet.robotics)
