Hi All,
Last weekend, I finally had some spare time and took the opportunity to
program my RCX with NQC. Sure beats the heck out the RCX code!
However, I had some problems downloading the firmware before I could
download my code. I used the following command:
D:\>nqc -firmware firm0309.lgo
The dos prompt gave the status dots (".....") to say it was downloading,
and the LCD on the RCX showed the usual counting numbers (0 to 1500).
But then for some reason, halfway or more through the download, the
prompt would come back and say "No reply from the RCX" and the download
would fail. I tried a couple more times and watched the numbers on the
LCD .... it would get to a number like say 350, then keep going to
something like 385, then something like a checksum must have failed, so
it goes back to 350, tries again, and then fails giving me the "No reply
from the RCX" error message. It failed at different places in the
download at different times. Sometimes at 300, other times as far up as
1200.
So I tried putting a shoe box over the RCX and IR transmitter, turned
out the lights, and pulled the blinds to sheild out as much light as
possible. Granted, it was still fairly light in the room, since this was
during the day. It still failed. At this point, I moved my entire PC and
the RCX and IR transmitter to a room in our house with no windows, shut
the door, and turned out the lights. This time the firmware made it, and
I was able to continue, but at the end, the NQC downloader still told me
"No reply from the RCX".
Anyone else had this much trouble getting the firmware down to the RCX??
After I finally got the firmware downloaded, I returned to my desk and
was able to download my NQC programs with no trouble at all. I made sure
and had fresh batteries all around. And the IR transmitter was set to
"long range" with only a few inches between the transmitter and the RCX.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

| (...) I've had some problems with this with an older version of nqc. If you give it a timeout of 70 or more (I believe), this should fix your problem. I believe the flag is -timeout or -t. Tim Tim Gion tcg3j@cs.virginia.edu (fastest) or (...) (25 years ago, 28-Dec-99, to lugnet.robotics)
