Right now I've broken off two sets (primarily) from my main collection for
'bot building:
The RIS and the Research Sub (Rescue sub?). The two boxes from those are
fairly well compartmentalized, and work well.
However, I am starting to find running short of certain pieces a little
annoying (mostly plates), so will probably migrate more of my Technics
pieces to the robot subselection. I've also got some Technics boxes from
'way back when they were called Expert Builder sets, which are marvelously
compartmentalized and great for sorting small parts.
In my larger collection I use a $10, 20-drawer upright storage thingy, as
well as about a dozen shoebox-size plastic stackable containers (Wal*Mart
had a sale 6 months ago that got 10 for $3.00), in addition to older Lego
boxes, or a few newer boxes now that Lego has returned to compartments for
its bigger sets.
I like the Plano solution, but I'm not sure its big enough for me.
