Graphite wouldn't necessarily harm the construction, but isn't it a bit messy? I would think a silicone-based lubricant would work great and not be harmful. (My Dad used to use something very expensive and silicone-based for various (...) (25 years ago, 4-Oct-99, to lugnet.robotics)

(...) My reply from Lego just came. It turns out that they are not ready to answer e-mails in the USA. So now I have to call some phone number. Sounds to me like they don't know the answer and are wasting time so they can find out. (25 years ago, 5-Oct-99, to lugnet.robotics)
