Graphite wouldn't necessarily harm the construction, but isn't it a bit
messy? I would think a silicone-based lubricant would work great and not be
harmful.
(My Dad used to use something very expensive and silicone-based for various
applications--including the legendary toaster incident in which his repair
of a toaster that wouldn't pop up produced a toaster that wouldn't stay
down.)
