I tried NiMH batteries in my RCX. It lost its firmware. I suspect the output
voltage (6 x 1.2 = 7.2) is too low. You should be able to do it using an
external battery pack, but I suggest you use 8 cells instead of 6. The
resulting 9.6 volts shouln't pose a problem as the input voltage is rated at
9...12 volts.
