Is the NQC doc backwards? is the large icon really
near mode?

The warning in the NQC doc is more historical than anything else.  When
NQC was first being tested I got some reports of problems in far mode that
went away in near mode (LED was being overdriven in far mode).  However,
as the user base expanded, I got a similar number of complaints in near
mode.

Eventually improved retry algorithms seemed to remedy most of the
problems, although there is still an occasional problem here or there.  My
advice nowdays is to try both and use whichever gives you the best
results.
