Richard,
I am currently working on a playing card device.
This initial project involves sorting a deck with randomly face down/face up
cards into all face down.
So far, I've managed to build a reliable feeder which feeds one card at a time
from the bottom of the pack.
The only "non-Lego" part I'm using are a number of 1/16" x 3" rubber O rings.
Looped around the very small pulley-like things you can build very effective
card transport mechanisms.
