I don't think you can do it. They use different carrier frequencies, and
slightly different signal timing. If you could get low-level control of the
infrared transciever, you might be able to do it - but I'm guessing most PC
IrDA ports are hardwired for standard IrDA. In any case, there's no chance
of it being compatible with the Mindstorms software.
On the flip-side, there are some other devices that don't talk IrDA, but
should be able to interface w/ the RCX. A good programmable universal
remote-control, for example. Possibly the new Palm Pilot model. I know
someone has gotten an HP200LX to do it, too (but I don't remember the URL of
his Web page). In all cases, though, you'd need custom software to do it.

Well, I read all that and I'm still none the wiser, has anyone talked to an
RCX using a Windows PC's IrDA ?

| (...) Well, I was thinking of using custom software, something that just downloads a program to the RCX over IrDA. It seems silly having to plug an IR tower into my notebook PC when it has a perfectly good IR transceiver on it. I guess it needs more (...) (26 years ago, 19-Nov-98, to lugnet.robotics)
