My understanding of the doc (the PDF file that documents the API) is that VB
talks to the RCX rather indirectly. Essentially, it's making OLE automation
calls to the Mindstorms ActiveX object (SPIRIT.OCX), which in turn does the
work of communicating to the RCX. It seems evident that it's basically
translating the automation calls into machine code that it then downloads
and/or transmits to the RCX over the serial link. The doc describes 2 types
of commands, immediate and downloadable, which implies that in the immediate
case the communication to the RCX happens at the time of the call
(immediate), while for downloadable, nothing is sent until a download is
initiated.
Anyway, to get a handle on ActiveX and OLE automation, the best place to
start would be something like "Inside OLE 2" by Kraig Brockschmidt [sp?].
Though there are books that are specifically about OLE Custom Controls
and/or ActiveX, this book is still better than most of those, and has the
added benefit of covering the rest of OLE.
I hope this makes sense.

| Well, I have a realtime interface program @ my web site along with some demo coding, also the pdf file/sample coding you can nab from mindstorms.com kinda helps, given the PDF file isn't great, but it tells you pretty much everything you can do. (...) (25 years ago, 2-Aug-99, to lugnet.robotics)
