I already oopsed on the age thing... but as for the rest, I agree that it
is certainly possible to learn the stuff- I started with basic at 8. But
the difference was that I had a reasonably clueful teacher to teach me- I
don't think that my step-mother will be teaching any coding classes soon,
and I wonder how many other parents will. In that sense, making parents
make sense of it is just as important, if not more so. I would love to
see Lego do this right- I want the company to be around in 10-15 years
for my kids. I just hope it works out for them, and they can find a
balance which doesn't scare off kids, but which allows for powerful
hardware for those of us who can use it in other ways. At the moment, I
get the feeling that the balance is too far towards ease of use. We'll
see with 1.5, I guess.

Besides, many kids these days already have the knowledge on how programming
flow works (if->then->else, while->do, etc),

Not real sure about that- my half-sister is often called by other adults
"scarily bright," and has received about as good an education as $$$ can
buy in the states. I'm sure she has the concepts, but not the language-
and that is what you need. Whether it is a graphical language or a text
based one (like we are used to) I'm not sure even she'd have the patience
to learn it, and she has more patience than any 8 year old I've ever met.

I learnt to program when I was 10, since I did classes on how to program in Logo and a very small amount of Pascal.  I also taught myself basic
around the same time.  Most of my programming ability (which isn't that much), remains from those distant days (though I am only 23).
Thus I think that kids are probably quite capable in programming much more complex programs than are possible with the language that comes with the
mindstorms kit, especially if it is graphical in nature.  Also, the kit we get here (in Australia), has the recommended age as 13 years and up (if I
remember correctly).

Thats just my opinion,
Marty.
