Check this out! =)
167 (~10 students each) teams from 32 primary and 47 secondary schools
are taking part in Singapore's first National Junior Robotics Challenge.
They have 3 months to design, build and test-run their robots. The teams
must use only parts from the Lego Mindstorms Robotic Kit.
Challenge:
It is Jan 1, 2000 and the first Singapore Antarctica 2000 team has
reached the South Pole. But it cannot be evacuated by air because of bad
weather. The students are tasked to build and send an intelligent little
robot to pick up survival packages (placed along the expedition route)
and take them as quickly as possible to the team.
The "playing field" is a 244-cm square plywood box, which lays out three
alternative courses for the robot to move from base camp to the South
Pole. The robot is to be autonomous. Once the RCX is placed on the
starting line, it has to navigate on its own via sensors to the
endpoint.
- The easiest is a flat but round-about route
- The more difficult one involves going through a tunnel
- The most difficult and shortest way requires the robot to climb "Mount
Vincent" (a mountain range in the Antarctica), consisting of a ramp up
and another down.
The survival packages are soft cotton balls that the robot collects and
drags along.
Points are given for the journey time, type of route taken, number of
balls collected and the visual appeal of the robot.
