That will be interesting to see. Once we know the specs for the LEGo solar
power items, we can probably find equivalent stuff elsewhere for less money.
I am still amazed by the selection of solar panels in the Edmund Scientific
catalog -- at least 3-4 dozen different panels, all with different voltage
and/or amperage. Also, little known Fischertechnik company from germany has
what looks like a quality solar power set, which I steal text off their page:
"This is made possible by the fischertechnik Solar Set, comprising
* the latest generation of crystalline solar modules (3V/240mA)
* the gold capacitor (2.3V/10F) to store energy
* a bell-type armature gear motor which has a very soft start (as low as 0.2V)
and
* the solar switch as the control centre for the solar components.
The drive for the models is operated from stored energy. In weak light or
darkness, the motor is supplied by the energy stored in the capacitor, which
charges very rapidly in sunlight. Solar technology, which even works in total
darkness!"
BTW, Fischertechnik offers quality construction pieces (plastic, that slide
rather than snap, and are much more "drop proof" than LEGO. The drawback is
that FT is harder to find, does not have a big a following, and are even a bit
more expensive than LEGO, on average. Although I did find some cool FT sets
at about 50% off a year ago at the Nature Store. Anybody else see these?
Here is a link to a page that shows locations and prices for FT:

Whoops, sorry--I will have to set my emailer to HTML. Anyway, the above page
needs to be updated, but it should give you a good start.

| Greetings, If you go to www.pitsco-legodacta.com (URL) you should see, under ecolab (I think), that Lego is releasing their own solar cell. They are also releasing a capacitor for energy storage. I think its due to be out in August. <<...>> (...) (25 years ago, 9-Jul-99, to lugnet.robotics)
